True Network Security Requires Computer Training and Certification

Posted in penetration testing with tags , , , , on July 23, 2009 by administrator

Many people are turning to IT jobs while other markets are shrinking. Overall, Network Security is a popular field that many companies are growing as a requirement. But there are a number of different job titles for employees, and there are three recommended different training courses that prepare someone for a real Network Security job and career. Some of the common “popular” IT security certifications have taken a back seat (see Sec+ and even CISSP - yes CISSP!).

The three Security certification courses we recommend are Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH), Certified Hacking Forensic Investigator (CHFI), and the LPT and ECSA (Licensed Penetration Tester and EC-Council Certified Security Analyst, respectively) dual course. Each course offers something different to its students, and each one is valued by employers in the IT world. The reason the value on these courses and certs is higher (in our opinion) than the Sec+ or the CISSP is because these security certifications actually have practical applications in them. Where as a sec+ or cissp do not, those are theory based, very simple and anyone non-tech can pass them just by learning some terms and vocab. For more about this, see this article on computer security training.

Network Security is an important field in this new technology era, and employers are relying more heavily on IT certifications as a measure for a potential employee’s skills and work expectations. Stay with the crowd and train on whats not only important now, but going to be the forefront in the future.

The Importance of Network Penetration Testing

Network intrusions happen all the time. I encountered an auto hacker - or worm trying to get into our network the other day that was accessing and messing with our exchange server. As the importance grows, its more important to begin to secure your company on higher and more frequent levels. If you aren’t ahead of the game, you’ll be hacked and data will be compromised.

Read the article which sums up the importance and accessibility of vigilant network intrusion prevention.

That seems to sum it up well.

Information Assurance Focus in Cisco Certifications

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , , , on February 24, 2009 by administrator

Cisco recently introduced certifications for the CCNA that allow you to gain a focus or concentration. There are currently three options, voice, wireless and security. They are basically lower level (or less difficult) tests that you can take to achieve this addition to your CCNA.

I have a feeling that the CCNA with Security is going to be the popular choice. Training for that is already available, typically as a three day class.

So watch for the 640-553 as the Cisco with Security, it should have a nice impact on the Network Security arena. Network Security consultants should start to flash the certification around a good bit and I think it should be as mainstay as CCNA is to Network Admins within two years or so. Thats usually how long it takes for certifications to gain ground.

Network security companies and IT consultants will need to be sure to maintain the latest skill sets in router and switch lock down and security. Cisco (no surprise) is paving the way here.

DoD 8570

Posted in Uncategorized with tags on January 15, 2009 by administrator

The DoD Directive 8570 is changing much of the IT playing field in the Washington DC, Maryland and VA area.

This area is being impacted by the Directive because many people may be losing jobs. Currently, Information Assurance personnel are being forced to get DoD 8570 training and certification. The DC area is loaded with Dept. of Defense contractors and these are the people who need to obtain these certifications.

The Washington area IT sector is also being effected by the Base Relocation that is coming up in the DoD.

Security, Is it the hottest IT segment?

Posted in penetration testing with tags , , on November 20, 2008 by administrator

Is security the hottest segment in IT these days?

I think that one could make an argument that it is. In many parts of the country theres almost no argument against that. In fact, an article in Parade magazine (Washington Post) stated that in the Washington DC area (including Maryland and Virginia, there are more IT / network security and information assurance jobs in need of qualified and certified people, than there are certified people.

Obviously the increasing number of security threats on government and private sector organizations is the main cause for the increased IT security job demand, but there are other factors that are contributing as well and one of reasons that stands out the most is the recent passing by the Department of Defense of the DoD Directive 8570.

Companies are now actively seeking the help of professional and certified security experts. Many organizations will hire a short term security consultant to come in for perhaps a quick penetration testing analysis and network intrusion prevention plan or something involving hacking and computer forensics. However, many companies that require the highest levels of network security will hire a full time staff member or even teams.
